St. Catherine’s Mixed Use Development

“….intense competition between schools for better and better facilities drove this project hard to find a unique outcome…”

This new facility was a response to an ambitious brief for a mixed use centre at the lower end of the school’s 22 acre site in Waverley, Sydney. A new aquatic centre with 50m lap swimming, water polo and diving, an information and function/study centre were designed over a car park/services basement. The new levels are connected through a large glazed atrium which allow views throughout the building to the ocean and horizon beyond, as well as natural ventilation and illumination. Although the new facility occupies a large footprint on this site, the landscaping around the building enhances the sense of being in a garden setting and creates a serene environment for sport, learning and socialising. Stormwater recycling, photovoltaics, displacement air conditioning as well as natural ventilation and lighting were all recommended environmental initiatives.
